17 September 2009 : CLWRota forum

Introduction

On September 17 we held a forum for CLWRota, inviting consultants, managers and administrative staff from our client hospitals together with representatives from several other hospitals, to discuss anaesthetics rotas.

The forum provided an opportunity for people from a wide distribution of medical institutions to discuss their concerns about running anaesthetics department rotas, to share ideas, and exchange unique insights and experiences. It was interesting to note how many departments had particular problems in common. This made it possible for departmental representatives to discuss ways in which rota management can be refined and made more effective.

We have produced a short video of highlights of the forum, which gives an insight into some of the interesting studies and developments that CLWRota has given rise to. You can view the video below (click to play).

The Presentations

During the forum we heard from consultants at the Chelsea and Westminster, which adopted CLWRota at the start of 2009. Dr. Mark Cox of this hospital gave a presentation on how CLWRota has been implemented at Chelsea and Westminster, and reported that he had used the system to identify over £326,300 of cost-saving benefits for his department so far, and had already saved his department over £100,000 per annum using information from CLWRota. He also discussed his recent adaptation of our rota system to undertake an examination of how emergency lists are staffed, with a view to improving them.

Dr. Peter Brooks, also of Chelsea and Westminster hospital, talked about ways in which he is using CLWRota's features and reports to monitor and improve training. He described the reports he runs to keep track of whether trainees are being given enough time both on their training modules and under consultant supervision, and also to review their leave bookings.

Dr. Neil Braude of the South Manchester University Hospital, which was the launch site for the CLWRota service, talked about the early days of its development and his involvement in establishing the system. He also affirmed the beneficial impact it has had at South Manchester. His frank analysis of the difficulties of compiling a rota in the old fashioned pencil-and-paper way entertained everyone present. He finished off by sharing his thoughts on how the system can be extended further, and what its applications could be in the future.

Paul Thomas from OEE, operations improvement specialists, also gave a presentation on how operations planning in the service sector can be upgraded.
